Packed Program, Packed House at Macquarie

Ku-Ring-Gai Male Choir performed its annual Macquarie University concert on Sunday, August 8. Part of the University’s Music on Winter Sundays series, the concert was a resounding success.

Macquarie Theatre was filled to near its 500 capacity. The Ku-Ring-Gai Male Choir sang 14 songs and Opera Australia tenor Warren Fisher and his wife, soprano Karen Bruce sang romantic solos and duets, including “Tonight” from “Westside Story”. The audience loved their program and was left wanting more.

Pianist Wojciech Wisniewski provided a distinctly Polish interlude, playing one of Chopin’s Grande Polonaise Brilliantes. Audience and Choir alike were dazzled by this display of piano virtuosity.

In some of the Choir’s songs, there are solo parts that are sung usually by one or two members. But we outdid ourselves at Macquarie, where four Choir members sang solo parts – Barry Alsop in “My Gallant Crew” from “HMS Pinafore”, Norman Lees in “With Catlike Tread” from “Pirates of Penzance” and Daniel Younan and Karsten Pedersen who sang the duet from one of the most loved scenes in opera, “In the Depths of the Temple” from “The Pearl Fishers”, with the Choir singing the chorus. There was actually  a fifth soloist – John Gibson played the anvil to add authenticity to the famous “Anvil Chorus” from “Il Trovatore”.

We can modestly say that the Ku-Ring-Gai Male Choir is in good voice. Our goal is to peak for the Massed Male Choirs Festival at Sydney Town Hall on November 14. We have worked through a number of the scheduled songs, but there are more to learn.

New singers can still join us in this task, culminating in November, when the Massed Choirs, under the baton of Alpha Gregory, will be accompanied by the Town Hall organ and a brass band – an experience not to be missed. Aspiring singers should contact Philip Rennie or John Middleton on the numbers below.

Proudly Supported by Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby Councils

Over the last few years the choir has received financial support from Ku-ring-gai Council to assist the choir with certain expenses, such as the purchase of jackets and a piano stool, and costs associated with the use of copyrighted music. More recently Hornsby Council has also provided similar financial assistance. We are very grateful for their contributions.
